Burke Gilman Trail Enhancement Update

Starting the beginning of December 2009, King County Parks will have survey crews working along the Burke Gilman Trail. The County will be surveying the trail right of way, the trail centerline and other points along the trail to finalize the design and construction documents and to prepare for construction. The County has sent a survey notification letter to all property owners within 500 ft of the of the trail a letter indicating that survey flags and survey stakes will be placed to mark the trail right of way which is outside of the trail footprint and the construction limits.  These markers will be on located on King County Parks’ property. The County expects this work to take between 8 to 12 weeks depending on weather and holiday schedules.

The County anticipates trail construction will begin early summer of 2010 and complete winter of 2010 – 2011. Gina Auld, Capital Project Manager, indicated that the County is looking to advertise this project in February or March of 2010, give Notice to Proceed by June, 2010, and begin construction 30 days after Notice to Proceed is given (or once all pre-planning activities are complete).  Ms. Auld has acknowledged that the County understands the City of Lake Forest Park's permit condition stating the City's arborist must meet with the County's arborist prior to permit issuance to discuss the trees to be removed during construction. Once the County's arborist is under contract they will be contacting the City's arborist to arrange field visits and meetings to discuss the permit conditions. The County expects to have a contract negotiated and finalized with the arborist by the end of March.
